Why do humans suck at airports?

And how can we fix it?

I kinda hate airports. In part because people seem to lose their brains. But it’s not their fault:

My point: I was supposed to catch a flight leaving at 19:15, which ended up being a bit late. So I just sat down and waited for them to open the doors.

However, there was a queue of dozens of tourists, standing up, waiting for the doors to open. They stood there for more than 30 minutes. Why?!

How can they not realize that 1) the plane hasn’t arrived yet and 2) you have a seat assigned, so it’s not like you won’t get a seat?

I see a few reasons for this:

  • People do what everyone else is doing (herd mentality).

  • People think that if they’re rushing, the plane will go faster.

  • People are bored, and this gives them something to do.

I don’t think airlines will do anything about it, as ultimately this means faster boarding times for them - even if it comes at the expense of customer satisfaction (which they don’t really care about). But an ideal airline would:

  • Have more seats for people to sit down.

  • Let everyone that’s queuing up before time know that they’re early and they can go for a walk.

  • Send notifications through the airline app for travelers to get to the boarding gate.

Perhaps then flying could start becoming a more enjoyable experience.

💡 Exercise for you: customer will have unrational objections and perceptions towards your brand - how can you fight them? Will being extremely honest work in addressing them?
